Helvetireader is a minimal, anti-social theme for Google Reader which uses a hosted user stylesheet for Google Reader served via a user-script. It aims to make the interface a clean, minimal experience where you’re not assaulted by an array of colours, social features and buttons (using Shortcuts instead). It’s designed for people who just read the latest entries in expanded view without all the other gubbins.

Helvetireader has been developed by Jon Hicks.

Grid-based Expression Engine Themes

If you’ve been looking for a quick way to get some of the well-known grid-based frameworks, such as Blueprint and 960gs, into your Expression Engine installation, it might be worth taking a look at the useful tool created by Nick Johnson of LIM, who says:

“I threw this together because I found that I was wanting to get an expression engine site up and running with some boilerplate css I could use to flesh out the design quickly. I prefer the grid based layouts, but for some simple layouts the css tinderbox works great.”

It will give you a nice blank canvas to work from based on some of the most popular CSS frameworks of the moment.

The Helvetica killer

WordPress Grid Theme

A recently added, grid-based WordPress theme, Studio 960 by Cudazi that looks quite nice and offers lots of scope for making it your own. A quick, inexpensive way of getting a clean, bold site up and running if you fancy it, too. I just thought that this kind of design might appeal to a few of my readers.

Designed with both the typophile and card player in mind, Helveticards are the beautiful, usable alternative to the traditional deck of cards. I haven’t come across these before but I’m glad I have. $10 seems pretty good.

Switzerland: Design For Life Exhibition

A Celebration of Swiss design culture is being exhibited at the A Foundation in London, showcasing 22 young designers and design studios presenting cutting edge aesthetic innovation from Switzerland.

The exhibition features the work of twelve of Switzerland’s most talented young designers: Laurent Benner, Alexandre Bettler, Kueng Caputo, Zak Kyes, Jurg Lehni, Urs Lehni & Lex Trub, Loris & Livia, Elena Rendina and Regis Tosetti. In a continuation of an exceptional heritage, these forward thinking designers produce innovative, fresh ways of working, creating projects that move across disciplines; by making furniture, designing books and organizing events. On display will be a range of exceptional objects.

Plus the exhibition will explore how Switzerland‘s identity has changed through the decades and concentrating on the key design periods that were pivotal in Swiss poster art. For decades, the Swiss created beautiful illustrated posters for their tourism industry, such as Emil Cardinaux’s Mattherhorn 1908. The exhibition will display 10 of these most influential and striking Vintage posters alongside 10 newly created works. Ten Swiss graphic designers will present their contemporary interpretation of a Swiss travel poster for today.

Applying Mathematics To Web Design

Smashing Magazine show you how to use different mathematical formulae to create a structured ‘grid’ to your web designs. They cover the usual supsects; the Golden Ratio, but there is another Indian-based ‘philosophy’ that I have never come across before, Kundli, which is based on horoscope charts. Interesting stuff.

Antonio Carusone, creator of Aisle One, a resource blog focused on graphic design, typography, grid systems, minimalism and modernism, has recently wrapped the site up in a fancy new design.

The new site design utilises keyboard navigation to ‘enhance the viewing experience’ and uses the up ↑ and down ↓ arrow keys to scroll through the site, which takes advantage of a nifty infinite scrolling feature. The site also has two viewing modes that can be accessed by pressing the (g) key for grid mode and the (l) key for list mode. And finally there’s a dashboard that can be opened and closed by pressing the (d) key. It contains other goodies like Twitter Hastags, inspirational links, featured articles and more.
